David Gordon Green will repeat the ‘Halloween’ formula in his ‘The Exorcist’ trilogy

With ‘The Exorcist’, director David Gordon Green plans to deliver a more thoughtful and profound thriller triptych than the nostalgia for the past provided by his ‘Halloween’ trilogy, but using a similar strategy.

David Gordon Green began his career in the field of comedy alongside James Franco and Seth Rogen. His best work in this genre was Pineapple Expressreleased in 2008. However, the Arkansas-born filmmaker discovered his talent for slasher with the H40 trilogy made up of Halloween, Halloween Kills Y Halloween: The Final Night.

After the last part of his trilogy with the iconic murderer Michael Myers, available in theaters at Cinemex and Cinépolis starting this Thursday, October 13, the director has shared details of his next project. This is a new trilogy inspired by another horror classic: The Exorciststarring Linda Blair and Max von Sydow.

This new project will follow the story of William Friedkin premiered in the 1970s, and Gordon Green is aware of the thematic and tonal differences. While Halloween it is a slasher, a midnight madness in which you are entertained in the cinema, The Exorcist is a supernatural drama that questions issues related to spirituality, religion, mental health, and family.

Although the director of stronger than fate plans to deliver a triptych in the tone of a horror thriller, that is, something more thoughtful and profound than the nostalgia for the past provided by his Halloween, the certain thing is that it will recover a similar formula. First, there will be three feature films (again) to tell the story, so the structure will be the same: a legacy sequel, a transitional sequel, and the result.

The other element is the recovery of the iconic character. In this case it is Chris McNeil, who is the emotional axis of The Exorcistlike a mother scared, anguished and desperate for all the dead ends of demonic possession and the scientifically inexplicable transformation of his daughter.

Ellen Burstyn played Chris McNeil in William Friedkin’s ‘The Exorcist’.

And finally, just as we saw the return of Jamie Lee Curtis in the new trilogy of HalloweenGordon Green has gotten the actress who originally played Chris McNeil to commit to his project. The Oscar winner, Ellen Burstinwill work closely with the director to share notes on the script and experiences of the character that go beyond what is seen in the 1973 film.

We can only hope that Gordon Green offers a modest, honest and worthy successor to William Friedkin’s work as he did to John Carpenter’s film. To prove it, see you in theaters October 13, 2023, tentative date for the premiere of the first part of the exorcism story.
