The museum-castle of Annecy hosts the exhibition Remains of the peaks. Occupying three rooms, this exhibition focuses on glacial archaeology.
A mummified chamois discovered in 1909, wood dating back 8,192 years, pieces of shoe dating from the 19th century… All this constitutes the exhibition Remains of the peaks which has taken up residence in the museum-castle of Annecy, since this Thursday, June 23.
This exhibition allows you to discover what glacial archeology is. Laurie Tremblay Cormier, head of the archeology collections at the Annecy museum, describes its characteristics: “First, there is its transchronological aspect because a glacier cannot tell the difference between a prehistoric object and a modern or medieval object. Then, there is the good conservation of the objects since we have the organic matter which is preserved. Finally, it is an archeology that attaches great importance to the relationship with the people who are going to make discoveries and who are not archeology professionals. » This exhibition also aims to raise public awareness of global warming.
From prehistory to the present day, Vestiges des cimes retraces nearly 8,000 years of history between man and the Alps. It is spread over three rooms of the museum. ” L’exhibition begins with a presentation of the impact of climate on alpine glaciers through a series of representations of glaciers whose 19th century paintings et contemporary photographs », says Laurie Tremblay Cormier. Then, Remains of the peaks continues with ” an archaeological presentation of heterogeneous objects that can be found in the mountains. » This ranges from tools devoted to the exploitation of the mountain to a Gallo-Roman statuette with a more spiritual aspect. Finally, the exhibition ends with “the presentation of four people whose bodies were found in the mountains as well as all their equipment, in the Neolithic and in the 17th century. »
The teams of the museum-château of Annecy have set up shelters for children. “We have created a place where children can rest, where they can also do fun activities such as coloring or connecting the dots”, specifies Hermeline Miege, cultural mediator. In a room, children can color. Also, the museum organizes every Thursday of this summer, at 11 am, a family visit of the exhibition. Finally, the Annecy castle-museum offers “Heroes of the peaks”, a free booklet in which you are the hero. He explains to visitors what to do if a vestige is discovered.
Remains of the peaks is to be contemplated until October 10, at the museum-castle of Annecy. This summer, the museum is open every day, except Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission costs €5.60 full price, €3 reduced price. It is free for young people under 12, accompanied by an adult.
