10 Cloverfield Lane

10 Cloverfield Lane tells the story of a woman, Michelle, who mysteriously finds herself in a cellar with two men following a car accident. She is then told that she has been saved from a worldwide catastrophe. Unable to know if these statements are true, she thinks she has been kidnapped. So she decides to escape. The film is directed by Dan Trachtenberg with Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman and John Gallagher Jr. It is the second installment in the Cloverfield franchise. It is, so to speak, the spiritual continuation of Cloverfield (2008). A third film was released in 2018, The Cloverfield Paradox while a fourth is in development.

Akira

Akira is one of the figureheads of Japanese animation and a reference in terms of the post-apo universe that influenced a multitude of works. While the city of Neo Tokyo was destroyed by a mysterious explosion, it is now criss-crossed by motorcycle gangs. Following an accident, Tetsuo is injured. Captured by the Japanese army, he acquires psychic powers in a top secret laboratory. While the political context is tense, the city is about to catch fire. Akira is adapted from the manga of the same name by Katsuhiro Otomo released in 1982 in Japan. He was awarded the Manga Prize by his publisher Kōdansha in 1984. Akira was one of the spearheads of Japanese comic strip culture in France.

Doomsday

Doomsday by Neil Marshall with Rhona Mitra, Malcolm McDowell and David O’Hara, recounts the terrible fictional disaster that ravaged Scotland. Indeed, a virus has wiped out almost 90% of the population. In order to stem the epidemic, the English government built a wall on the border. Thirty years later, this same virus appears in London. A commando goes in search of a potential vaccine in the heart of a supposedly “dead” Scotland. The film pays homage to masters of the genre, such as George Miller’s Mad Max and John Carpenter’s New York 1997. Neil Marshall is one of the most important figures in British horror cinema. He previously directed the fantasy films Dog Soldiers and The Descent.

The road

In The road, the world has mysteriously “exploded”. There is no more vegetation, no more food and the last survivors are content to wander. As humanity descends into barbarism, a father and his son manage to recover some personal belongings and walk towards the ocean through depopulated territories. The Road is a film by John Hillcoat starring Viggo Mortensen, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Guy Pearce. It is a film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s book of the same name. He was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2007.

madmax

madmax is directed by George Miller, with Bertrand Cadart, David Bracks and finally Mel Gibson in the lead role. The film takes place in a war-torn Australia where outlaw bikers and police clash on the roads. This film was a worldwide success and was for a long time the most profitable feature film thanks to its small budget not exceeding 350,000 dollars. It is inspired by Point limit zero (Vanishing Point, 1971) by Richard Sarafian. The saga consists of four films, three of which with Mel Gibson and a final one, released in 2015 and titled Fury Road, with Tom Hardy.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Mad Max: Fury Road, still directed by George Miller, marks the return of the cult saga to cinema after 30 long years. We follow the journey of max, a loner traveling through a world destroyed by the oil and water war. Captured by Immortan Joe’s troops, Max becomes a living blood pool for injured fighters. He then takes advantage of the betrayal of the Imperator Furiosa, to flee through the desert. If the director remains the same, it is Tom Hardy who inherits the main role formerly attributed to Mel Gibson. We find at his side Charlize Theron. The film won six Oscars at the 88th ceremony. Note that a spin-off based on the character of Furiosa is in preparation.

Maggie

Maggie is an American zombie film by Henry Hobson starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Abigail Breslin and Joely Richardson. While a pandemic has decimated the population, the government quarantines the infected. Maggie is 16 when she learns that she has been infected and decides to flee. For his part, her father Wade Vogel tries to find her, even if it means confronting the government. The film was part of the “Special Presentations” selection at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014. It is also the director’s first fiction feature film, although he had already worked on Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes as well than the video game The Last of Us.

Snowpiercer

Snowpiercer is a film by Bong Joon Ho inspired by the successful French comic Le Transperceneige by Jacques Lob and Jean-Marc Rochette. The Earth suffered a violent ice age that wiped out all life on its surface. Despite everything, there are survivors who have all taken refuge in a train. Inside it, a micro-society has been established where only the richest have access to comfort at the front of the train. Starring Chris Evans in the lead role, the film is a stark tale of class struggle. The director often addresses this subject in his films. The concept was recently adapted into a series on Netflix, but with a completely different story and a totally changed cast.
