Chipiona follows

It is not the first time that a dozen members of the Salamanca diocesan residence have come to enjoy ten days of rest and beach in Chipiona. We have only missed the essentials that the covid-19 situation demanded of us. This year we are taking advantage of ten days of relaxation and sea bathing in Chipiona.

Chipiona is a privileged place of beaches in the province of Cádiz. Located in the vicinity of other beautiful and rich towns, such as: San Lúcar de Barrameda, Rota, Cádiz and Jerez de la Frontera. The town has around twenty thousand inhabitants. Although it can double in the summer with the people who come to enjoy its beautiful and desirable beaches.

Externally, the two monuments that distinguish it, even at beach level, are the lighthouse and the Sanctuary of Nuestra Señora de Regla, governed by the Franciscans, an order of minor brothers of San Francisco. Both are guides for the inhabitants of the town of Chipiona: the lighthouse, a natural orientation guide for the ships that arrive there, and the Sanctuary of Regla, which guides and leads, as a spiritual guide, the believers of the place and surroundings.

Chipiona is a great tourist center due to its iodine-rich beaches. Its municipal term has a coastline of 12.6 km in length, 7.6 of which make up five main beaches. We are welcomed by the Franciscan community of the Sanctuary of the Virgen de Regla, and logically its beautiful beach is Playa de Regla. It is bounded by the lighthouse and the Camarón beach, and is 1.7 km long. Due to its proximity to the urban area, it is a very popular beach and possibly the most emblematic of Chipiona. Since 1989, without interruption, it has held the award of the Blue Flag of the Clean Seas of Europe.

This beach is the one that, luckily, we have to enjoy. It is also enjoyed by all those who stay at the House of Spirituality of Our Lady of Regla. Thus, we also have the opportunity to meet people, mainly from Andalusia, especially Seville and Córdoba, but also people from all over Spain, as is our case, coming from the land of Salamanca.

Among the town’s festivities is the so-called Velada de Regla: Dedicated to Our Lady of Regla, it is celebrated, logically, in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Regla. The festivities culminate with the departure of Ntra. Señora de Regla on September 8 and end with a fireworks display on the beach of Regla. This year they coincide with our stay, and we will be able to enjoy them (or suffer them) around the date of Friday, September 8.

Among the characters born in Chipiona, is the admired, beloved and entertained singer Rocío Jurado. With her traditional cante jondo, renewed and updated by herself, she deserved and received the Gold Medal for Merit at Work from the Government. The mayor of her hometown, Chipiona, has built a mausoleum in her honor, in the municipal cemetery where she was buried.

Since 2007, the “International Day of Rocío Jurado” has been celebrated, which is attended by people from all over the world, family, friends and admirers of the artist from Chipiona. A mass and a floral offering are some of the acts that are organized that day in tribute to Rocío Jurado.

As a permanent memory and honor to Rocío Jurado, in addition to the Monument, located near the port, we must mention the birthplace of Rocío Jurado, the House “My grandmother Rocío”, which is a museum of local history, and the Central Museum of interpretation Rocío Jurado.

For us, the group from Salamanca, what we have to highlight is being able to enjoy the advantages of the Santa María de Regla Franciscan Spirituality Center, which strengthens our spirit during the ten days of relaxation and spiritual meditation, and the marvelous Playa de Regla that it comforts our bodies, already mature in age, that need attention and care adapted to our advanced life. We take advantage of the days that we will still be here, and we hope to be able to enjoy another similar period of rest next year, which we are already grateful for as a gift from the Virgin of Regla.
