Chinese writer Xue Mo honored at the 74th Frankfurt Book Fair

Award-winning Chinese writer Xue Mo, renowned for his literary works depicting life in Western China, showcased his over 30-book oeuvre at the China International Book Trading Corporation (CIBTC) booth at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2022.

The acclaimed contemporary Chinese author’s exhibition attracted the attention of publishing houses and copyright agencies around the world, with the booth crowded with visitors and publishers eager to get their hands on his works .

Xue Mo, whose real name is Chen Kaihong, is best known for his Desert Trilogy, also considered a representative work of the Chinese nativist literary tradition. Selected Stories by Xue Mo, which contains wonderful short stories that depict the essence of the region’s culture, life and spirit, has been translated into over 20 languages, including English, German, French, Russian, Spanish, Korean, Japanese, Italian, Swedish, Nepali, Hindi and Arabic.

The publication of other works, including The Curse of Xixia, White Fox Ridge, The Monk and the Spirit Woman, Suosalangetc., has made him an important figure in contemporary Chinese literature and an essential presence in the literary representation of the Chinese West.

Entitled ” Everyone Enters Their Own Desert: Xue Mo and His Light the exhibition, which closed to great acclaim on October 23, featured her novel Into the Desert and the Hebrew version of Selected Stories by Xue Mo, giving readers around the world a unique insight into the stories that depict the mysterious cultural landscape of Western China.

Translated from Chinese into English by American sinologist Howard Goldblatt and translator Sylvia Li-chun Lin, Into the Desert is one of four stories included in Selected Stories by Xue Mo. Howard Goldblatt said that reading and translating Xue Mo’s works is like no other experience, adding that he hoped his translation would help English readers appreciate the beauty of Western China, while Sylvia Li-chun Lin praised Xue Mo’s work for its profound descriptions of life in China. Western China. The Women The Camels and The Dholes is translated by British sinologist Han Bin, who is full of praise for Xue Mo’s work.

Famous Italian translator Paolo Marcenaro hopes to translate more of Xue Mo’s works, while Yoann Bernard, director of the Swiss Book Agency, said he looks forward to reading more of Xue Mo’s works.

Sunandan Roy, director of Indian publishing house SAMPARK, said Xue Mo is not only a famous writer, but also a cultural scholar who has a deep insight into human nature. He hopes to continue working on the translation and publication of other philosophical works by Xue Mo after the publication of The World Is a Reflection of the Mind. Publishers from Spain, Mexico, Argentina, Sweden and Japan, such as Colisión Libros, Nordin Agency and Tohan Corporation, have also shown strong interest in publishing Xue Mo’s books.
