Netflix: Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio is revealed in a magnetic trailer

Two years after the Pinocchio by Roberto Benigni, Guillermo del Toro offers his own version of Carlo Collodi’s Italian tale. The story of the mythical wooden puppet by the Mexican director will be available exclusively on Netflix. The platform has just unveiled the first (magnificent) images of the animated film, scheduled for the holidays this end of the year.

It is an understatement to say that the story of Pinocchio, first published in 1881, has inspired cinematographic works. Indeed, the work of Carlo Collodi, The Adventures of Pinocchio, has many times been the subject of achievements on the big screen. We particularly remember the Disney animation classic, released in 1940, but also this live-action feature film from 2002, which immersed us in a colorful and luminous atmosphere. That year, Roberto Benigni went behind the camera and offered his own interpretation of the original Italian tale, orchestrating the mythical scenes of the life of the wooden puppet, thanks to actors such as Nicoletta Braschi, Carlo Giuffrè and Kim Rossi Stuart. For his part, he planted the role of Pinocchio himself, allowing him to evolve according to his own imagination. Then in 2020, another film still involved Roberto Benigni, but this time in the costume of Gepetto, the father and creator of Pinocchio. Visibly familiar with the work, the Italian actor wanted to repeat the experience, but therefore changing roles.

The family-oriented tale thus tells the well-known story of Gepetto, a country laborer who works with wood. He decides one day to make a puppet, which will finally come to life and become the character of Pinocchio, spiritual son of Gepetto. The character with the long nose evokes for some the exacerbation of the qualities of the adventure hero. Courage, honesty, respect, wisdom… So many values associated with classic moralistic tales. Even today, the fragility and the destiny of this essential character continue to attract spectators from all over the world.

Zemeckis on Disney+, del Toro on Netflix

So we are not surprised to see that the illustrious wooden puppet will know two new versions of his story, by the end of the year. Starting with a new adaptation of the house with big ears. After making it one of its animation classics, more than 80 years ago, it will offer us a live-action film on September 8, this time, directed by Robert Zemeckis. On the program, a cast of stars, led by Tom Hanks and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. And while this Pinocchio will arrive exclusively on Disney+, there is another platform which will then reveal its own version of the famous tale, by another great director: Guillermo del Toro has concocted an animated film for us, which will be broadcast in December on Netflix.

The two new cinematographic proposals will thus succeed each other a few months apart, but nevertheless seem very singular in their realization. Evidenced by the magnetic trailer of the Pinocchio by the Mexican director, who has just been unveiled by the N rouge platform:

In view of the first images, the Mexican filmmaker will offer us a version that is unique to say the least, which will therefore be broadcast during the holiday season on Netflix. Guillermo del Toro seems to have chosen to take the opposite view of the original tale. Less magical, perhaps deeper, his universe seems stranger, at first sight, than the story that will be offered to us by Robert Zemeckis on Disney+.

The director, screenwriter, novelist and producer of Mexican cinema follows the script of the Italian tale a priori, in his own way. On the other hand, he joins the Pinocchio of 2020, darker and more magnetic. The first images of his animated film, sublime, thus give rise to personal projections, on the part of those who know the prowess of del Toro.

The artist is notably at the origin of memorable works such as Pan’s Labyrinth or The Shape of Water, celebrated with four Oscars, including the award for best picture. This time, the talented director is tackling a very personal adaptation of the Italian tale, using the stop-motion technique. This process is aligned with the following principle: taking photos and assembling them, until animating them together to make a complete film. The result promises to be stunning in the case of Pinocchio by del Toro.
