Nanny: here is the new horror of Prime Video

If a movie it is also judged by the accolades it gets from critics, then we must admit that Nanny bodes well. This title is in fact the first horror to have won the Grand Jury Prize: Dramatic to the Sundance Film Festival Dramatican award that until now had only been awarded once to a black director.

What is Nanny about

The debut film of the writer and director Nikyatu Jusu it’s a creepy horror out of the usual canons: this is where much of its charm lies. The movie in fact it has many elements of the psychological thrillerbut it also addresses some socially and politically relevant issues such as identity, race, gender and socioeconomic status.

The story is set in New York. Here the protagonist Aishaa woman who emigrated from Senegal who had to leave her son at home, starts working as a domestic worker for one wealthy couplelooking after the house and the young daughter of the two.

The home life of this wealthy family disturbs her, but the goal of Aisha is being able to save enough money to pay for the trip to the United States for your child, who is still in Senegal.

As the baby’s arrival approaches, however, a dark and disturbing presence begins to invade Aisha’s mind and life, fundamentally threatening the “American dream” she’s hard trying to build for herself and her son.

Is Nanny a true story?

In a certain way, yes. The story is in fact linked to personal events of the director’s childhood Nikyatu Jusuwhose mother supported the family by doing the domestic workerjust like the protagonist.

The movie – adding some horror elementsspiritual and supernatural which are obviously the fruit of fiction – it is therefore proposed to tell the true experience of immigrant domestic workers in the United States: often poor people who, temporarily leaving their children and families behind, take care of the children and homes of wealthy American families to support themselves.

Aisha is portrayed by Anna Diopwhile Michelle Monaghan And Morgan Spector they lend faces to the rich couple who take on the protagonist as a domestic worker. In the cast of Nanny there are also Sinqua Walls (previously seen in American Soul), Rose Decker (Mare of Easttown) and Leslie Uggams (Deadpool).
