mystery of love

“Today the feast of the solemnity of the Holy Trinity arrives. For most Christians, it has become an abstract idea, far from everyday spirituality. It is a mystery that is difficult for us to understand, explain and live”

“But the Trinity is not an abstraction, rather it is the revelation of the intimacy of God manifested in three divine persons between whom there is a relationship of love”

“Today we also celebrate the ecclesial day known as Pro Orantibus to remember, thank and pray for the people who, in monasteries, dedicate their lives to praising God and praying for the Church and the world”

“Let us approach the mystery of the Trinity with faith and make this mystery the source of our life”

“The liturgy has everything planned”, the architect Antoni Gaudí said with admiration.. Scholars of his life and work state that the famous architect achieved a great understanding of Christian worship. His liturgical formation was so profound that in certain aspects he advanced some of the teachings of the Second Vatican Council.

Truly, the sacred liturgy has everything foreseen in the path that it proposes to us throughout the twelve months of the year. And so, after the culmination of Easter time with the celebration of Pentecost, Today comes the feast of the solemnity of the Holy Trinity, which invites us to contemplate and give thanks for the work that God the Father has accomplished through his Son and the Holy Spirit. As Saint Irenaeus of Lyon wrote, the Son and the Spirit are like “the two arms of God the Father.”

For most Christians, the Holy Trinity has become an abstract idea, removed from everyday spirituality. It is a mystery that is difficult for us to understand, explain and live. The Trinity is not an abstractionbut it is the revelation of the intimacy of God that is manifested in three divine persons between whom there is a relationship of love.

The Trinity is not an abstraction, it is the revelation of the intimacy of God that is manifested in three divine persons between whom there is a relationship of love.

The well-known icon of the Trinity by Andrei Rublev (15th century), where we see three young people sitting talking around a table, can help us get closer to this mystery. They are three characters with similar faces, because they are all God, but each one has a different colored suit (gold, red and green), because They represent the three divine persons. The Father who gives everything to the Son, the Son who receives everything from the Father with gratitude and the Spirit who is the fruit of love between the Father and the Son. This image is inspired by three characters that appear in the book of Genesis (v. Gn 18,1-15), they are three envoys of God welcomed by Abraham, who enter into a relationship with him. Abraham invites them to sit down and share the table together, while Sara listens to them inside the store. It is a relationship of affection and fraternity like the one that God the Trinity wants us to have with Him and among ourselves.

Today we also celebrate with joy the ecclesial day known as Pro Orantibus to remember, thank and pray for the people who, in monasteries, dedicate their lives to praising God and praying for the Church and the world. They are witnesses of that hope that “does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us” (Rom 5:5). We can never be grateful enough for what these men and women do for our salvation and that of all humanity.

Dear brothers and sisters, let us approach the mystery of the Trinity with faith and make this mystery the source of our life. May the Holy Spirit, fruit of the love relationship between the Father and the Son, help us to love God and be generous with others.
