Karlovy Vary (Czech Republic), Jul 7 (EFE).- The Karlovy Vary film festival today presents the film by the Spanish Jonás Trueba “You have to come to see her”, a call to reestablish ties of coexistence in societies prey to the festering of opinion and nationalism, which aspires to obtain the Crystal Globe of the Czech contest.
“The film insinuates, defends an idea of living together, of how we live together in the world, that we have to accept differences, since many do not think like us and they must also accept it, and that costs a lot,” Trueba told Efe in the spa town of Karlovy Vary, shortly before the official screening of his ribbon.
The film director from Madrid says that with this work, which premiered on the 17th in Spain, he advocates “taking better care of one another, for a more general, more globalist society… Not thinking so much about Spain, about Catalonia, but in the world. Being citizens of the world, where you have to find some balance”.
The health and social crisis unleashed by the covid pandemic has only brought to the surface a problem of “estrangement, of distancing people, with things,” says Trueba.
In the plot of “You have to come to see her” two couples in their thirties meet in a house on the outskirts of Madrid after a long period of confinement to rebuild ties that the coronavirus has put to the test.
The filmmaker says that he is based on the thesis that the German philosopher Peter Sloterdijk developed in “The Bankruptcy of Western Civilization”, a civilization that is at the crossroads of not knowing where it is going, so he considers how to make the world with a return to spirituality.
“That’s why nationalisms are so ridiculous, because they’re exactly the opposite,” adds Trueba about some problems that concern him, but which he deals with “lightly” on celluloid.
It is his sixth feature film, and in it Trueba returns to the cast with the Navarran actress Itsaso Arana, with whom he already worked in “La reconquista” (2016) and “La virgen de Agosto” (2019)”.
Vito Sanz, Francisco Carril and Irene Escobar also perform.
Trueba is pleased to have been able to move forward with this celluloid project after a period of uncertainty due to the pandemic, and he did so with four actors and few locations.
This minimalist format, only 64 minutes long, has allowed the filmmaker to continue in his tradition of “making movies with freedom, without input pressure, more honest, more genuine, since we pursue unconscious freshness.”
Something that has also responded to the vital needs of the cast, explains Efe Sanz.
“We had a vital need to get together. Let’s get together. In this (film) I have felt it on a personal level. It has been more necessary, more therapeutic. (Because making movies) is healing, it is something that connects you with life.”
Producer Javier Lafuente also agreed with this evaluation.
“We had to make a more exclusive design, with more rigorous connotations. We started a priori from one thing that works in our favor: the reduced number of people, without figurations or support elements. We were able to work in our natural way,” Lafuente told Eph.
Regarding filming during the covid, which lasted three days in December 2021 and four days in the spring of 2022, Trueba stressed that they have been possible for him and his team since they have “become strong in the years of the crisis (2009 -2010)”.
“We have learned to make movies in hard years, due to previous crises and we are more prepared to face (make) movies in complex situations,” explained the man from Madrid.
“We are smaller, used to making movies with very little, and in difficult times we suffer much less,” added the film director. EFE
