From the meeting between Pasolini and Don Giovanni Rossi was born “The Gospel according to Matthew”. Even Zuppi at the Cittadella for the 100th anniversary of the great director and poet

“Altro da te – PasolinAssisi” is the title of the 80th Course of Christian Studies completely dedicated to Pier Paolo Pasolini’s Assisi adventure scheduled in the “Christian Citadel” of Assisi, from 22 to 27 August 2022. One hundred years after his birth by Pier Paolo Pasolini and sixty from his meeting with the Citadel of Assisi, the leitmotif of these days will be the thought and work of the writer and director, linked by a profound, fruitful and lasting relationship with the “Pro Civitate Christiana”: contributions from critics, educators, actors, directors and historians are expected. On the website www.cittadella.org, it is possible to view the program of the course which will deepen the modalities and outcomes of the meeting and the consequent presence of Pasolini in the Cittadella: its elaboration for the cinematographic part (a series of films will be screened, Palestine and The Gospel according to Matthew, Uccellacci e uccellini and in the autumn session of the course also Accattone) the Cinit Cineforum Italiano gave its contribution.

After all, the bet from which a masterpiece of the caliber of “The Gospel according to Matthew” was born, a film that was screened to the prelates who participated in the Second Vatican Council and premiered French inside the cathedral of Nôtre-Dame.

To reflect on Pasolini there will be among others Cardinal Matteo Zuppi (president of the CEI and archbishop of Bologna), Ascanio Celestini (who is touring the show Museo Pasolini), Ivano Dionigi (formerly magnificent rector of the Alma Mater), Roberto Mancini, Goffredo Fofi, Francesca Tuscano, Roberto Chiesi (head of the Pasolini Archive in Bologna), and the eminent philologist Franco Zabagli. Next to them is “our” Giovanni Ricci who will give an original contribution, the result of research in the archives of the Citadel on the friendship born with Pasolini, Don Giovanni Rossi and the other Volunteers of the Citadel; in addition Marco Vanelli, director of “Cabiria – Studi di cinema”, quarterly published by Cinit, who on the morning of Friday 26 August will converse with Guido Chiesa and Nicoletta Micheli, respectively director and screenwriter of the film Io sono con te, screened on the evening of 25 , on the theme “The sacred between image and word”. Just as Pasolini’s The Gospel according to Matthew intercepted the spiritual and pastoral needs of Catholics at the time of the Council, Io sono con te is the film with an evangelical topic for Christians today, called to question themselves on the historicity of Jesus, on his Jewishness and on the humanity matured within the Nazareth family.

During the research that the members of the Cinit have been doing for months in the Archivio della Cittadella, an unpublished intervention by Pasolini was found dating back to his participation in the Writers’ Conference in 1965 on the theme of restlessness and hope in contemporary literature. The discovery was made by Lapo Lucarotti, a very young collaborator of Cinit of Lucca, recently turned 18, who spent a few days last July to carry out these researches together with Marco Vanelli. Pasolini’s text will be presented and commented on by Giovanni Ricci during the conference, and premiered in «Avvenire» in the same days.

The autumn session will see the presence of Dacia Maraini and a recital by the singer Giovanna Marini. An exhibition itinerary was also created, the highlight of which is the original text of the script of The Gospel according to Matthew with the interesting annotations in the margins of the director and Don Giovanni Rossi: until 31 December it will be possible to have this original experience of immersion in the world of the writer and director born from the assembly of the various remaining testimonies of Pasolini’s active presence in the archives, in the library, in the art gallery and in the sound library of the Cittadella. It is a truly unique opportunity for the world of youth, university and high school students, to get in touch with the most discussed figure of writer, director and intellectual of the second half of the Italian twentieth century. Participation in the conference is free. Those interested in participating must contact the Citadel secretariat by calling the number: 075/813231, or by writing to the email: ospitalita@cittadella.org.
