A sequel planned for one of the greatest successes adapted from a video game?

On the occasion of the broadcast of Sonic the film on TFX, we invite you to take stock of the saga at the cinema. After a second opus released in theaters in March 2022, is a 3rd film planned? We have the answer!

In February 2020, Sonic the Movie landed on screens, achieving great success. Internationally, the feature film brings in 320 million dollars for a budget of 85 million. In France, the blue hedgehog attracts 2.1 million fans.

After this great performance, Paramount very quickly launched the production of the second part, which will land on March 30, 2022 in cinemas.

Success is again at the rendezvous with 402 million dollars in greenbacks collected worldwide. In France, Sonic 2 recorded 2.2 million admissions, roughly the same score as the first episode.

Paramount was so convinced of the success of this second installment that the studio had already formalized the start of the third film in February 2022, just before the release of Sonic 2.

“We’re thrilled to announce that the third Sonic movie and first live-action Sonic series for Paramount+ are in development. We have a great partnership with Paramount, and we’re excited to continue growing the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. with them”said Haruki Satomi, CEO of Sega.

He had added: “2022 is shaping up to be a big year for the franchise with the release of the second movie, as well as the highly anticipated video game Sonic Frontiers, which will be released over the holidays. Sonic has been adored by fans around the world for over 30 years. and we look forward to continuing to provide them with memorable moments and experiences for many years to come.”

A few months later, in August 2022, Paramount announced the release date: December 18, 2024. This month will be placed under the sign of the color blue because the famous hedgehog Sega will face the Na’vis of Avatar 3 there. bet for the studio against the juggernaut of James Cameron, whose second part is breaking all box office records.

According to IMDB, Jeff Fowler, director of the first two episodes, would return for Sonic 3. Ben Schwartz will also return to lend his voice to the fastest hedgehog in the universe. His sidekick, Tom, played by James Marsden, will also be there.

As for Jim Carrey, who plays the villainous Dr. Robotnik, the trend today is towards an absence of the actor. The latter had left the hypothesis of a retirement during the promotion of Sonic 2.

“Well, I’m going to retire. Yes, probably. I’m really serious”, he said. Then the artist clarified that it was going to depend. He could reconsider the question if a golden scenario were to be offered to him. “If it seems really important to me for the public that I do it, I could consider continuing. But here, I’m taking a break”he said.

“I really love my quiet little life. I paint and indulge in a spiritual life that I adore. And I’ll tell you something that no celebrity will ever dare to say: I have enough. I’ve done enough. I can’t take it anymore”he concluded.

Remarks to which producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher reacted last May, saying that the role of Dr. Robotnik would not be recast if the actor did not pass the third. Since the body of the big bad was not found at the end of the second opus, it would be easy for the writers to leave it out of the new plot.

Especially since another opponent of the hero was revealed in the post-credits scene: Shadow, a black-haired nemesis endowed with the same speed but less inclined to do good. Regardless of the story chosen, there should be a show at the cinema for Christmas 2024.

In the meantime, we will be entitled to other video game adaptations in 2023: Super Mario Bros, the film will be released on April 5 and Dungeons & Dragons: Honor of Thieves will land the following week.
